  Brief History

HISTORY OF THE TEACHERS COLLEGE

The present Teachers College traces its beginning to the College of Education which was opened in 1938. In 1940, the Junior Normal School was opened and women were first admitted to the Colegio de San Carlos. The immediate post-war years found the College of Education offering the Junior Normal Course, the Junior Normal Home Economics Course, Home Economics and Secondary Education with majors in the following fields: English, Mathematics, History, General Science, Biology, Home Economics, and Social Sciences. In 1953, the Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education curriculum was introduced.

Fr. Ernest Hoerdemann, SVD, became the first dean of the College when it opened in 1938. Fr. Lawrence Bunzel, SVD, assumed the post in 1950; Fr. Anthony Buchcik, SVD, in 1958; and Fr. Raymond Kolk, SVD, in 1965. The first lay Dean of the College was Teopista Suico, who was appointed in 1967. Clara Lucero assumed the post in 1970.
The Department of Secondary Education was formed in 1948 with Alfredo Ordoña as Chairman. Clara Lucero was appointed Department Chairman in 1967 and Julieta Gonzales succeeded her in 1970.

When the College of Education was renamed the Teachers College in 1958, it had five departments: the Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Physical Education, Home Economics, and Spanish. In the same year, the Spanish Department was transferred to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 1976, the Elementary and Secondary Education Departments was fused into one.

The Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management and the Associate in Hotel and Restaurant Management was offered in 1994 under the Home Economics and Nutrition and Dietetics Department with Paz Reyes at the helm as Chair. The Department was renamed Home Technology Department in 1997 and, in the same year, the College was again renamed College of Education with Dr. Montana Saniel replacing Dr. Julieta Gonzales as Dean. With the assumption of Dr. Saniel as Dean, the College was organized into three departments, namely: Teacher Education with Milagros Tabasa as Chair, Physical Education with Chair Dolores Suzara, and Home Technology by Chair Paz Reyes. However, in 1999, the Department of Graduate Education with Dr. Elenita Basilgo as Chair was added to the College. This was in line with the initial implementation of the vertical articulation of graduate programs. In the year 2001 – 2002, in keeping with the vertical structure, both the graduate and undergraduate programs were fused into one department, the Teacher Education Department handled by one Chair, Dr. Elenita Basilgo.

Dr. Marilou Gallos assumed as Dean in School Year 2003 – 2004 and a new department was added, the Science and Mathematics Education Department (SMED) to address the needs of students enrolled in the Science undergraduate programs like the Bachelor of Science in Physics-Chemistry, Physics-Mathematics, Biology and those in the graduate Science programs. The SMED was an offshoot of the Science and Mathematics Institute (SMEI) which was organized to provide training for Science and Mathematics teachers.
